Defining Revival

Hello, Matt Bennett here. Welcome to the Bennett Broadcast. This is episode seven by the Grace of God. Thank you so much for joining in with me on these. And I hope you're learning a lot and enjoying being encouraged to draw close to the Lord and understanding what revival is and how to seek the Lord for revival. We want to see God do something amazing and extraordinary in our country. And we got to learn the scriptures and look at history to know what that's all about and what he's done in the past and how we can be in step with his great and awesome and glorious plans. I want to pray as we get going. Father, we love and praise you. You're great and awesome. Lord, may every word spoken be words from you and be pleasing to you in Jesus name. Amen. I want to put a question before you or thought before you and a couple of facts about the United States. First of all, I think it's helpful to know that by the Grace of God in the United States, we see about a million people come to faith in Christ every year. And that's wonderful. They come to faith. They either grew up in Christian homes or maybe they had a more dramatic conversion later on in life, but they confessed. They repented. They believe and became Christians. Praise God. Thankful, thankful for this. And we see this sometimes in social media and other ways, personal testimonies or a group of people that come to faith in a, be at a college campus, be at an stadium, be it anywhere. And it's a wonderful and incredible thing through all sorts of ministries to through books, movies, all sorts of Christian causes and initiatives. All of this is great. But at the same time, we've got to take in something else. And that is every year also we see about two to three million people leave the faith in the United States. And so that means a net loss of one million people every year from the faith and some of these people pass away and they're not replaced by young people and Christian families becoming born again. Or they just what people call deconstruct or apostasize or whatever you want to call it. And there are a lot of statistics that show this. The Pew research is probably the most famous in this regard, but there's also Gallup surveys and varnish surveys, etc. And it's true all across the board. It's not that it's just happening in some parts of the country, but not in others. It happens in all parts of the country. It's not happening just with Republicans or Democrats is happening with both Republican and Democrats. It's also happening in all races. It's not as if it's just happening in the white race or the black race or others. But in all the races in the United States, this is happening. And we I think it's hard for us to get our minds around this also young people as well as old people. I think in part because we might be in circles where our particular church is growing or we might be seeing someplace where great things are happening. Maybe we're seeing miracles happen and people coming to faith and that's great because after all a million come to faith every year. And of course a lot of other good things happen. Marriages get restored and people get healed and all sorts of supernatural activities miracles happen. This is really great. But the overall is still a net loss every year. And that's true here in New York City. It's been this way for decades and across America. It's been that way for decades. And sometimes I think maybe encourage people people will put out messages that in some way at least if not intended this way, they can get received as there's a revival here going on in New York City or other different places. But it hasn't been the case and I live in Manhattan in New York City and while it's been wonderful to have a lot of Christian initiatives here, it's only slowed the decline. It has not in any way even leveled out the spiritual decline and also it's worth knowing it's not just those who were spiritually weak who now are no longer Christian. And some people will say, well, that's what's happening. And that's not all bad because at least the church is pure. But very few researchers think that's what's happening. And that's not what's happening when you look at the data. It's strong Christians becoming weak Christians, strong Christians becoming non Christians. It's all across the board in terms of the whole nation. So what do we do about that? And how do we handle that? How do we process that? What do we? What do we think about that? And this episode is about to finding what revival is because revival is all about reversing that. We want to see that reverse and it can be reversed has been reversed in other times in American history and around the world. And so it can be but we got to understand what revival is. So I want to start by talking about the purpose of revival, which is to advance the kingdom of light over the kingdom of darkness. And that's why God gives us these outpourings of the spirit or revival so that progress may be made in his eternal plant. I want to give five overviews of what this eternal plan is. The first is creation that is God created a kingdom on earth and it was perfect. But of course, we know Adam and Eve send and we are all the image bears, all those humans, of course, and this messed up God's intention and plan. And then we had the corruption that came. We had the sin of Adam and Eve and then we had problems of the tower of Babbel. We had been a philum. A lot of problems, all this evil coming into the world. And then we see God's plan of restoration begins with Abraham and Genesis 12 right at the very beginning of him beginning to create a people through whom he would bring a savior through which he would redeem the whole world and call people back to him to reestablish his kingdom. And when Jesus came, he of course provided provision for our sins. So all those who repent and believe are part of God's kingdom of light and coming out of the kingdom of darkness. Before we know the Lord, the scripture say, we are children of wrath. But once we come to faith, then we are children of God, as it says in John chapter 1. So now currently we live in the church age and this is the time of kingdom expansion. We are in the process of taking the gospel to every person around the world and expanding the kingdom of light into every quarter. We will explain more about what that is. And then it all culminates when the bride is holy and beautiful. That is the church. Jesus comes back and establishes the new heaven and the new earth. Some believe in a little millennium of thousand years and see that as part of the process. Some see that as more figurative, but everybody believes that we get a new heaven and a new earth. And when Jesus fully establishes the kingdom and that's what we're working towards. So it says this in Revelation 21, 2, 3. It says, and I saw the holy city, New Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride, adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with him and they will be his people and God himself will be with him as their God. Praise God, praise his name. This is where it's all headed. So we see all the brokenness, the sin, the rebellion in the world around us death. That's all going to end because God's in the process of bringing in his full kingdom and expanding the kingdom of light into every quarter of the earth and calling people to himself. There are bunches of passages in the scriptures that talk about this process. You see Colossians 1 for instance, 19 and 20 to talk about how Jesus is doing this. He is reconciling all people to himself. It says 119 and 20. For in him, that is Jesus Christ, all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood on the cross. And then we see here in 2 Peter 3, 11 and 13. This passage shows that we have a role here to hasten the day of the coming because we're all we're warriors for God. We are labors in the kingdom. We are growing families and teaching them to believe we are influencing culture in different ways. We are evangelizing, taking the gospel to all quarters, expanding the kingdom of light and therefore we are hastening the day of the coming of God. So here it says 2 Peter 3, 11 and 13. Since all of these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of people ought to be in lives of holiness and godliness, waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set on fire and dissolve and the heavenly bodies will melt as they burn. But according to his promise, we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells. So the kingdom of light is all about where righteousness dwells, where it's going out all across the earth. And we see this also in the most famous prayer ever given to humanity. The most famous prayer in the history of the world is the Lord's Prayer. And Jesus says in it, what we're supposed to pray and we pray, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Every time we pray that prayer, and it's helpful to pray it every day as part of your prayers, but we're praying that this come about, we're praying and playing a role and bringing about the kingdom of light. So as a kingdom of God, kingdom of heaven throughout the whole earth, we're praying for this to come about. So we've been part of this, as you prayed this prayer, even if you were unaware that this is what you're a part of and what you're doing, which you're praying for the establishment of God's righteousness on the earth. And so this call to advance the kingdom of God during the church age where we're living now, talk, taking the gospel to every creature on earth, discipling and baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son, the Holy Spirit, spreading the kingdom of light to all territories and all cultural spheres. This is the greatest commandment ever given to humanity by the greatest person to ever live our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. And by the grace of God, may we submit ourselves to His divine purpose and proof faithful to this. This is our role. This is why we're here. After we're saved, we don't translate and go directly to heaven. We've got a role to play and that is to expand and deepen the kingdom of God. Also, there are the purposes God uses it. He uses it to grow us, to test us and to mature us. So there were all the more capable and able in the next stage as well as this age too. So we do live in the church age and it's our role to hasten kingdom of God to come about. So let me give you a definition of revival. Revival comes by God's grace through Christians' faithful efforts of pleasing him, by seeking him wholeheartedly, resulting in multiplicative advances of the kingdom of light, over the kingdom of darkness, in the personal, territorial and cultural spheres accompanied by periodic outbreaks of the Holy Spirit and group settings. That's a mouthful. We're going to talk about that, explain that a little bit. It's with a great sense of what revival is in the scriptures. And it's helpful in a broad way to think about revival in two big components. Those aspects that bring revival and those things that evidence that revival has come. And revival is all about God's means of expanding the kingdom of light into every sphere. The power that he supplies to see great advancement. And we've seen at different times in Christian history extraordinary periods of advancement of the kingdom. Take Africa, for instance, a hundred years ago, they had about 10 million Christians. Now they have about 550 million Christians. That's an unbelievable extraordinary advance of the kingdom of light over the kingdom of darkness in the last hundred years in Africa. Amazing. This has been happening in many places around the earth recently and in American history as well. But you think about the two major parts. It's what draws the presence of God on the one hand. It draws these outpourings of the spirit and revival. And then what is evidence that revival has come. So what draws God is seeking him wholeheartedly as he requires. Not just as what is comfortable or what is familiar or what seems good enough for us, but what he requires, nothing less than that. And then what evidence is, is a radical increase in these three spheres, which we're going to impact here in a moment. As well as outpourings of the spirit from time to time, which we will see. So those are the two things. So if you want to ask yourself in a situation or historical event, say, okay, has there been radical on the one side seeking the Lord prayer, fasting, repentance, obedience to the Lord. That aligns with the scriptures. And are we seeing these radical increases in these three spheres? That's what we want to evaluate when we see and characterize whether there's been revival. So in looking at the word revive revival in the Bible, it's used a number of times. A number of times it doesn't really apply the way we're thinking about it. It's like someone drinks some water and they were revived, something like that in the Bible. But there are a number of passages that do center on this concept. We're going to look at a couple of the most important passages that actually use the word revive revival. So Psalm 197 says this, the law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul, the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple. So you see here an aspect of revival, you see the law of the Lord, the commandments of God reviving. This is a person on an individual level. It stirs a person up and this happens to us as we dive deep into the scriptures. We understand them and obey them. Another passage is Psalm 69 30 to 33. He says, I will praise the name of the Lord with the song. I will magnify him with Thanksgiving. This will please the Lord more than an ox or a bull with horns or hoofs. When the humble see it, they will be glad you who seek the Lord, let your hearts revive. So you see here this phrase that those who seek the Lord, let your hearts revive. Revival comes when we seek the Lord. And how much do we seek the Lord? Well, in the same verse it says, this will please the Lord. So we have to seek him in a way that's pleasing to him. And that includes a lot, prayer, which includes a worship. But it includes, as we list out in other places, seven different aspects of the seeking God lifestyle, humbling ourselves through fasting, humbling ourselves generally. But with the help of fasting, radical prayer, which includes worship, frequent prayer. Also taking in the scriptures in large measures, repentance and all things, obeying the Lord continually, doing this with other people and persevering in the seeking over time. This is what it means to seek the Lord according to the scriptures. Now, here is maybe the best passage in the Bible that uses the word revival in the passage describing what it is. This has been a very meaningful passage to a lot of people who study, practice and call people to revival, Hosea 61 to 3. It says, calm, let us return to the Lord for he has torn us that he may heal us, he has struck us down and he will bind us up. So now this passage is written to the covenant people in the Old Testament. And so the application for us today is Christians. So it says, when it says, let us return to the Lord, that means, of course, that we're not as close to the Lord as we need to be. So revival is for the Christians to draw close to the Lord, closer than where we are now. And part of the problem when revival is needed, of course, is that we think we're doing okay with the Lord, but we're not. And we got to return to him with our whole hearts. After two days, he will revive us on the third day, he will raise us up that we may live before him. Let us know, let us press on to know the Lord is going out. It sure is a dawn. He will come to us as the showers, as the spring rains that water the earth. You see another very important concept here. It says, let us know, let us press on to know the Lord. It's in seasons where the covenant people, we don't know him as we think we know him. And we have to return to him and really know him what he expects, what he's like, what pleases him. And this is where we are in the West right now. We in many ways feel like we know him and those of us Christians, we think there might be problems outside the Christian church, or even a certain elements of the church, but I'm talking about the center of us most devoted Christians, but there are ways in which we don't know him. And we do need to know him in a deeper and fuller way, what he expects of us, so that we return to him with our whole hearts. And then he revives us. I think you can be helpful to think about three different revival schools. I think the third one is the accurate one is what the Bible teaches, but I think there can be misunderstanding about some of these. Now, I spoke a little bit about the first school in the episode six on spiritual people, and you might want to look at that one. But this one, this school revival has an emphasis on the miraculous. And in this mindset, I'm kind of exaggerating and kind of caricaturing, so you can get the idea. But in this case, it's revival when there's lots of demonstrations of the Holy Spirit's power in terms of people getting the gift of tongues, miracles, healings happen, deliverance is happening. Now, I myself believe in these gifts of the spirit, and I minister in this way, but I want to say this is not what revival is. And even though these are helpful gifts from God to help strengthen the church and are needed and helps make the church stronger. A lot more of this in episode six on spiritual people on that and what a spiritual person is according to the scriptures. So there are places and times in history where people will point to incidents and they'll say, okay, this was revival. And I think some great spiritual activity was happening, but I would not consider it revival. So you take that Toronto blessing so called in the 1990s. And this was at the airport vineyard church. And then later it wasn't a vineyard church in Toronto, Canada. And there's outpourings of the spirit. People came from all over the world. And the Holy Spirit was moving. People got filled with the spirit and they would go back to their own countries and have an impact for God. And so there's definitely a move of God and a Holy Spirit working. But I wouldn't call it revival for reasons to come. Also, we think of the what people call the revival in the late 1990s in Pensacola. This is Florida city in Florida and the neighborhood was called Brownsville. So you hear it called Brownsville or Pensacola. And I got to go and visit the assembly of God church during that time and they had a lot of great preachers had Steve Hill there preaching and others. And I was a blessing to be there. And there's a lot of good things happening there. People come into faith and outpourings of the spirit periodically. But you didn't see the whole city at Pensacola change. I'm not saying there wasn't some positive impact. Same thing in Toronto. You didn't see the whole city change. And this is we'll get to this, but in terms of what revival is. So, but you can see impartation of spiritual gifts happening. And this doesn't mean this is not of God. And it's beneficial. But it's not it's not revivals like we'd like to think of it. Now there's another school of thought or a way people talk about revival. And this is is very much away from the charismatic gifts and in many ways this group of people look at it. If these gifts are present, then maybe perhaps revival isn't there at all. It's almost a sign that revival hasn't come if weird things happen in a church service. So the emphasis on repentance is which is very, very good. This is part of what it means to seek the Lord. Usually those there is insufficient prayer and fasting at the level which the Lord would want to see happen. So the power level isn't there as it otherwise would be. I was talking to a leader of revival and Fiji islands a few years ago. And they've seen amazing things happen there in the villages for 25 years. And I was telling them about this kind of stream in the United States. And I said, yeah, I told them the amount of prayer and fasting that goes in before they give the messages on repentance. And he just looks at me and he says they have no power. And he's right compared to what they see in the Fiji islands and other places of the world far, far less happens. Now still good things happen whenever you're preaching repentance. It's a good thing. So hear me right. I'm very glad that it's being done. But the level of prayer and fasting that needs to go along with it to have revival isn't quite there, even though very thankful for all the good things that are happening. Now this last category I call the kingdom of light and darkness approach. It's what I believe and other ministers what the international church practices. It's what the first and second grade awakening exhibited. You can see some demonstrations of this too in some videos that documentarian George Otis Jr. did on call transformations and you can see. You can find some of them on YouTube of how communities in different parts of the world have been radically changed. There's a lot to this could speak a long time on the great awakenings and how these were cultures of very fervent repentance obedience prayer fasting and seeking the Lord and proclamation of the word and wilded things happen and large geographies over long periods of time. So that's the school I would call the kingdom of light and darkness in terms of revival. I think that's what revival is. And that's what we need to strive for. There are a few passage in the Bible that people point to the most when it comes to talking about revival. The most famous of which is second chronicle 713 and 14. It doesn't use the word revival, but it is a description of revival. And this is a great passage. This is the theme of the book of first and second chronicles and second chronicles as full of revivals. As you read through an episode after episode, the book was written to teach the people of Israel. Hey, when you seek the Lord with their whole hearts, he'll come and do amazing things and restore you and fulfill his covenant promises. And that's what the book is about. So this is the theme. First and second chronicles was written as one book. It was just split into two because one couldn't fit on one scroll. So it's one big book. But here it is second chronicle 713 and 14. When I shut the heavens so that there is no rain or command to locust to devour the land or sent pestilence among my people, if my people who are called by my name humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven. I will forgive their sin and I will heal their land. So you see I mentioned a few minutes ago the two big parts of this revival. There's the part that we do to attract the presence of God and then there's the evidence that it's pleasing to him in the Lord response and you see that in this verse because you see here that if my people who are called by my name humble themselves, pray, seek my face, turn from their wicked ways. It doesn't list all the aspects of seeking the Lord, but it's a great verse summary of this, especially in that phrase seek my face, which contains a lot of aspects of drawing close to the Lord. So that's the part that we do and drawing close and then you see the Lord respond. He hears from heaven. He forgives sins and he heals land. And this looks a little different in the new covenant that's covered in other places. But this promise is for today and notice that this is given to the people of God. He says if my people and so this is a message to us Christians today when we turn and seek him at this level, then he responds. And so if we're not seeing the second half of this happening, then because God is a promise keeper, we need to say to ourselves, we're not meeting the conditions that he lays out here in sufficient measure. And sometimes people get confused and say, well, we're not seeing God do all these things around us because he's sovereign. Well, God definitely is sovereign, but he's also a promise keeper. He's just as when we repent of our sins and put our faith in Christ, we can say confidently that we are Christians because he keeps his promises. Even if we don't feel anything when that happens, sometimes we do feel something, sometimes we don't. He keeps his promises. Same thing here. God keeps his promises and we will see wonderful spiritual activity happening when we meet the conditions and the vast majority of time in the West, we do not meet the conditions. By the grace, I was able to lead a small revival. It lasted five years, small because it was only a student body of 5,000 students years ago at Princeton. And it began, I did a 40 day fast in the summer of 95, but then the Lord spoke to me in a dream and said, do another 40 day fast, and then he would bring revival. And so for that to even begin, I had to do two 40 day fasts. And then beginning right after that second 40 day fast, I call students to seek the Lord and fast and pray, and which they did and others. And it was a wonderful experience for five years, which I share elsewhere. Okay, I want to give another passage on revival in the Bible. We don't quote this one as much today, but it's really helpful to center it on now. Jonathan Edwards, known as the theologian or revival. And he was one of the leaders of the revival and the great awakening in the 1730s and 40s. He pointed to this passage. It's a few verses in Zechariah 8 as the most descriptive passage on revival in the Bible. And he would know. So it says here in this passage, Zechariah 8 20 to 23, that says the Lord of hosts. People shall yet come, even the inhabitants of many cities, the inhabitants of one city shall go to another saying, let us go at once to entreat the favor of the Lord and to seek the Lord of hosts, I myself am going. Many people's and strong nations shall come to seek the Lord of hosts and Jerusalem and to seek the favor of the Lord. Thus says the Lord of hosts and those days, 10 men from the nations of every tongue shall take hold of the robe of a Jew and saying, let us go with you for we have heard that God is with you. So this is what you see happening. You see some people who are seeking the Lord that called others, hey, come with us. We're going to seek the Lord. And as you have this increasing number of people seeking the Lord, then God works outside of that community. And here you see it says nations of every tongue they shall take hold of the Jew and say, let us go with you for we have heard that God is with you. They can see and know there's a presence of God that is happening. This is when revival is happening on incredible passage and worth memorizing. So in talking again about the kingdom of light, what I want to mention this is it's our role to see the kingdom of light expand and revival is the means of God seeing that go forward and great measure and great leaps and bounds into the future. And revival is the normal state of the church normal in the sense of that's what the Lord wants it to be, but it's not always there, but it is at times. And we want it to be at that way as much so the kingdom of light is also known as the kingdom of God or kingdom of heaven or the heavenly kingdom. These are also anonymous terms and we're all about advancing the kingdom of light over the kingdom of darkness. So when we see a radical or a multiplicative increase of the kingdom of light over the kingdom of darkness and three main areas, then we can say, okay, revival has come and is here and it's the personal sphere, the territorial sphere and the cultural sphere. Now this is explained all in depth much more if you go to christian union.org slash seven keys and it's laid out here in the videos. There's a lot here. We'll be looking at a very high level here, but that whole series there explains the process of advancing the kingdom of God throughout the world through the process of revival. So the personal sphere when revival comes, you see a lot more happen in our own souls and lot more of the kingdom of light and less of the kingdom of darkness. So people become christians and people are much more prone to live lives of lordship and obedience and devotion. You also see wonderful things like healings and people are more devout in their prayer. So people change of the personal level and a radical increased way. And so usually when people talk about revivals, one thing they'll comment on is how many people came to faith. Also, there's a territorial sphere and geography changes in the sense that a whole community you walk into a space and a city or a state or a country and you can feel the difference people comment that's because the territory is changed. There's more can be said about this, but are skipping over. And then also there's the cultural sphere and the cultural spheres they improve and this is the religious sphere of the families, business, education, government, media, medical arts, entertainment, athletics, these all improve. They have more the kingdom of light is set with kingdom of darkness. And there's a lot to talk about with this, but for instance in the family sphere, you have a lot more couples staying together. You see a lot more parents loving the children. You see a lot more children being obedient to their parents. There's implications. Some people talk about this about being seven areas of society like seven mountains. Others divided differently five areas or 11 areas, whatever it is, but just all these cultural sphere. So when we're seeing a radical increase in number people coming to faith and also the territory changing and the cultural sphere changing. Then we say, okay, this is revival. Now in the United States, even though as a whole nation, even though we see a million come to faith every year, we're still having a net loss a million every year. So we haven't been seeing revival in the United States as a whole for many decades, maybe unlimited spaces in a small place like a campus or even a small city. That net increase in believers, but as a nation, it's been a net loss for every year for decades. It can be helpful to look at other events in American history to think about whether they were revivals versus outpourings. And outpourings are of God is when the Holy Spirit gets poured out. It's a beautiful thing. The revival is a little bit different as it's been described here. So like the 1906 Azusa Street revival people call it or awakening or outpouring. And that was a beautiful experience over the course of time where people came and they got spiritual gifts. And they took it all over the world and they're amazing miracles that happen. But it's not as if Los Angeles, and this was a street in Los Angeles, it's not as if Los Angeles changed or America changed. Of course it did a little bit as people there, but it didn't meet that definition of revival. And nor could you say there are necessarily more Christians in Los Angeles after this time than before Los Angeles is a big city. And this is just one small place where these events were happening as powerful and as amazing as it was. And you can go through all these different events in American history, for instance, and categorize and say all right is more of an outpouring or is it more of revival. And in the US, the big moves, the big revivals are the great awakening of 1730 and 40 second great awakening, which lasted maybe 40 years from about 1800 to 1840. Some people put the businessmen's revival in it because we did see a million come to say in 1857 across the whole United States, but it only lasted a year. And so there's not a lot of time for cultural institutions to change. So it's a bit of a mix there. So as a reminder, revivals and increase in the presence of God himself, it's an invasion and a radical increase in the three spheres, personal territorial and cultural. And of course there's outpourings and group settings of the Holy Spirit will fall on people and group settings as part of all of this. It could give a lot of examples, but I want to wrap this up here's a lot to just as it is. I want to reiterate again this definition of revival. Revival comes by God's grace through Christians, faithful efforts of pleasing him by seeking him wholeheartedly, resulting in multiplicative advances of the keynote light over the keynote darkness and the personal territorial and cultural spheres and company by periodic outprings of the Holy Spirit and group settings. And so we can be thankful every time a person comes to faith in Christ, we can be thankful every time there's an outpouring of the spirit that might last for a few days or a few weeks or something, even if the whole city isn't change per se or something like that. So we should be thankful for every good thing, every proclamation, every teaching that happens, every church service that happens, but it doesn't mean that it's revival per se. Revival is much bigger, it's widespread, it's long lasting, and it's what we're praying and wanting to see happen in this country by the grace of God.
